One-day commuter cycling traffic skills courses

Start of a course - outside Chain Chain Chain Bike to Work Victoria 2001 is a commuter traffic skills program for cyclists, organized by the Greater Victoria Bike to Work Society with financial assistance by a special ICBC grant. Between May and October this year, one-day practical training sessions will be provided to 450 commuter cyclists in the Greater Victoria region. The courses are aimed at both practicing and first-time commuter cyclists.

"As a proponent of safe cycling initiatives and awareness programs, ICBC is proud to be supporting the Greater Victoria Bike to Work Society, a major advocate of cycling education," says ICBC president Thom Thompson.

The Bike To Work Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to increasing the use of bicycles as transportation and improving the safety of the cycling environment. The society, which hosts the annual Bike To Work Week, also works with government and major employers to develop cycling proficiency and safety programs.

Cost: $35.00. Schedule: One-day courses will run from May through to October. Time: Weekday classes run from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Saturday classes from 9:30 am to 5:30 pm.

On the road - Taking the lane on Bay Street coming up to Quadra The course will be presented in one eight hour day, taught by a nationally certified Cycling Instructor and an assistant. Approximately half of each morning and afternoon session will be spent in the classroom and half on the road, in traffic. Rides are learning opportunities and a chance for participants to practice skills discussed in classroom. The pace is relaxed with frequent stops to discuss situations.

An Effective Cycling video and overheads are used to explain the objective of each ride. Each student will receive a copy of BC's new Bicycle Operator's manual, Bike Sense. At the end of the course, each participant leaves with a Victoria Cycling map that they can use to identify the best route options to and from work. Each student requires: a functional and safe bicycle with five gears or more, an approved bicycle helmet, light, bright, clothing (safety vest provided) foul weather clothes (depending on weather), bag lunch.

Classes are held at: Chain Chain Chain Cycling Services, In the Alley, 1410 Broad St. (west side of Broad St., between Johnson & Pandora).
