Harbour and Esquimalt Improvements

There is a new cyclist activated crossing light at Harbour and Esquimalt. This route should now replace the current detour up and over the railway bridge for those coming South on the Galloping Goose Trail and turning East for downtown Victoria via the Johnson Street Bridge. Just stay on Harbour. press the button for the crossing light. It changes very quickly. And it stays red for the cross traffic long enough for you to get to the "take the lane" location just before the bridge. If travelling West to the Galloping Goose stay on Esquimalt Road and turn right onto harbour. Be carefull - Esquimalt road from the bridge to the traffic light is pretty rough.

If coming from Esquimalt you can still use the trail just north of Ocean Point that connects Kimta Road to Esquimalt, just before the JSB.

The city has removed the sharrows from the access ramp, but cyclists can still use this route to access Kimta and Tyee Roads.

"UPDATE January 10, 2011: The detour connecting the Galloping Goose to the JSB is now closed as is Kimta street when approaching from the West. It is now advised to stay on Esquimalt and/or Harbour roads no matter which direction you are coming or going!" this is pasted in from website, is not true..KIMTA IS NOT CLOSED..never has been. KIMTA is the PERFECT Street to approach from the WEST, take the trail alongside Ocean Point, there is a swervy path down to Esquimalt Road (no longer a bump, its been paved) and onto the Bridge with NO STOPS (as there is now at Esquimalt/Harbour). I would NOT recommend that people "stay on Esquimalt, not matter which direction.." is not the best..if you are coming from Esquimalt..get onto KIMTA, take the Path straight towards J. S.B. and then curve onto Esquimalt Road, its PERFECT and smooth and stop-free (watch for pedestrians on the curvy-path though).

As far as I know, the only path along Ocean Point is the Songhees Walkway, which is clearly posted "NO CYCLING". I this is the path you take every day, you are doing other cyclists a clear disfavour. If there is another path, great.

She means the little fenced in path to the north of Ocean Point that you would take if you were going say from Spinnakers to Swans. 8)
