Hello Pre-Riders!
I did the Devonian today.
The route is good though Sooke Road must be kept to
a minimum - no shoulder and very busy. Mechosin Road on the other hand was very
light traffic and a pleasure to ride. Mostly downhill too. Definitely roads
going, trails coming back.
The little village of Mechosin is a great
stop:
Coffee shop with samosas, Cornish pasties, soup,
sandwiches.
Full menu restaurant licensed for
beverages.
General store that is a Galloping Goose Sausage
Company outlet.
All are open on Sundays.
In the summer there is a public market also on Sunday.
Devonian Park has a bike rack and
toilets. It is a real gem of a park - nice old growth forest with bubbling creek and then a huge pebble beach with great views to the Olympic Peninsula.
This will be a great Recreational Ride but I think
we should save it for later in the year when the days are longer and warmer. You
would really want to spend a couple of hours in the park and on the beach for a
lazy picnic lunch and exploring. Also it is a bit long for this time of year -
close to 60K for me with my additional 10K to get to the Switch Bridge and
back.
Witty's Lagoon is just a few K East of Devonian. We
can use pretty much the same route for Witty's for another rec
ride.
