Bowker Creek Greenbelt Loop - February 5, 2012

Writeup from Jim:

After twice postponing for weather, the nineteen riders took advantage of the excellent weekend weather to do a leisurely survey of what is probably the flattest route from downtown to UVic, with a side trip along Haultain Street and Dean Avenue to see a bit of Bowker Creek that is still an open stream. Special thanks to Duncan for coming out and enlightening us on some of the aspects of the Bowker Creek Initiative (http://www.bowkercreekinitiative.ca/) and the Shelbourne Corridor. We made several stops along the way to discuss route options and note where some GVCC advocacy might help, then returned to Selkirk Station via the Lochside and Galloping Goose trails.

What a great turnout - 19 riders on a cold and cloudy day in early February. Interesting and informative ride. We should all know a little bit more about the streams in our local watersheds and support their restoration, preservation and "surfacing". And of course building bike paths next to them. :-*

Although the pics make it look grey and cold, it was actually quite a nice day!

You all put a great deal of effort into making the recreational rides a delight - so much of our city to learn from a cycling point of view. Thank you

Glad you folks rode part of the green corridor route. It would have been nice if your group had been able to "make your way to the headwaters", the pond at the UVIC Faculty Club, located not far from the last photo posted, in front of the McPherson (sp?) Library. Still, that you went, travelled along the BC Hydro Field section - or "reach" as it is referred to in the Bowker Creek 100 year blueprint plan, and showed the Browning Park section - the completed "pilot project" section of green corridor completed spring 2011 that we marked with an AWESOME community celebration....I am heartened that more community members are seeing what CAN happen, what cycling infrastructure CAN provide. Cheers, Carolyn (Hi Simon!)

Hi Carolyn.

If you can map out a route from the headwaters to wherever Bowker reaches the sea (Willows Beach I believe?) that follows the creek as closely as possible, we would be happy to do a Bowker 2.0 ride later in the year.
